This webinar is the seventh in the India Energy Transition Dialogues – a series convened by the Centre for Policy Research to explore different paths to meet India’s 21st century energy goals. Each webinar in this bi-weekly series will discuss different pathways proposed by think tanks and research groups working on specific pieces of India’s energy transition puzzle. These discussions – by drawing on practical experiences and exploring the costs and opportunities associated with these approaches – seek to facilitate constructive engagement with government policies and interventions at the national and state levels.
In this session, we will discuss the new technologies, developments, capacity additions, strategic policies required to accelerate the growth of renewable energy (RE). India has set an ambitious target to install 450 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030. With 96 GW RE capacity (21% of 2030 target), as on March 2021, India has to add 35 GW capacity year-on-year. Meeting this target entails manoeuvring global supply chain issues, innovations on clean energy technologies, market research and development, and strategies for decentralised and grid scale deployment. Technology has been identified as an important but difficult-to-predict driver of change within the energy systems. The technologies that are considered the most important in the energy transition in India are wind, solar, storage and hydrogen. The webinar will explore technology options, challenges, opportunities, business models and strategic policies around these technologies.
