Chimni on the 4th of March 2011. This seminar is part of the International Law Seminar Series organized by the Group of International Lawyers in Delhi (GUILD), anchored at CPR.

Discussion Topic: Third World Approaches to International Law: A Tribute to Professor R.P. Anand

Professor R. P. Anand  - President of the International Society of International Law, Executive Council member of the Asian Society of International Law,  and Professor Emeritus at the Centre for International Legal Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Professor Anand, author of the path breaking 'Sovereign Equality of States in International Law,' among other works, is one of the pioneers of the Third World Approaches to International Law movement. His writings have fundamentally shaped the scholarship, practices and methods of a generation of international legal scholars in the global south, and will continue to wield influence well into the future. Professor Anand, sadly passed away earlier this year, and this session led by Professor Chimni is our attempt to pay tribute to Professor Anand's monumental scholarship and enduring legacy in the field of international law.

Speaker's Biography:
Professor Chimni is a Professor at the Centre for International Legal Studies(CILS) at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was formerly Vice Chancellor of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences. He has been a Visiting Professor at the International Center for Comparative Law and Politics, Tokyo University, a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, Visiting Fellow at Max Planck Institute for Comparative and Public International Law, Heidelberg, and a Visiting Scholar at the Refugee Studies Center, York University, Canada. He served as a member of the Academic Advisory Committee of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for the period from 1996-2000. He is on the editorial board of several national and international journals like Indian Journal of International Law, International Studies, International Refugee Studies, Georgetown Immigration Law Journal & Refugee Survey Quarterly. His recent books include: The Third World & International Legal Order: Law, Politics & Globalisation (co-edited with Antony Anghie, Karen Mickelson & Obiora Okafor, Kluwer Law International, 2003) and International Refugee Law: A Reader. New Delhi: Sage, 2000.
