Kurian’s work at the Centre since 1996 has focused on exploring major issues and debates in India’s and China’s foreign policies. Some of the recent themes she has worked on include India’s Look-East policy; post-Mao policy shifts in China’s regional development, particularly the political thrust given to integrating southwestern China with the extended regional economy; energy security; the emerging discourse on security; globalization and the welfare state. Her recent publications include Emerging China and India’s Policy Options (New Delhi, Lancers Publishers and Distributors, 2001); Welfare States and the Future (London, Palgrave, 2005).
Kurian is currently working on her book Emerging Asian Security Scenarios: Recasting India’s Diplomacy that looks at new critical investigations into Asian security within the larger context marked by the end of the Cold War, the rise of Asia and a multipolar world in the making. It will also focus on the imperatives behind a reorientation of India’s Asia policy and its moves towards greater integration with the wider Asian region. A second project looks at evolving patterns of state-society relations in China as the process of economic reforms considerably redefines social space, creating opportunities for multiple social interests to be represented and fulfilled. The study will examine the complex societal changes that are transforming state-society relations, presenting new challenges for the Chinese state especially as traditional control mechanisms fall into disuse. The manner in which these are resolved will hold far-reaching implications for the future stability of China.
Dr. Kurian has a Ph.D in International Relations from the Jawaharlal Nehru University and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Delhi. | | Books | | |
